4 June 07 >COLTON TRAFFIC - update

Traffic through Colton is at an all time high with traffic using Colton Road as a 'rat run' to avoid the roadworks on the A63 near Sainsbury's. HGV's & particularly refuse lorries are now regularly using the road through Colton as a short cut. The road was never meant to take this type and level of traffic & something needs to be done.

Objections need to be raised with ourlocal councillor as quickly as possible to highlight the issue.

20 April 07 >COLTON TRAFFIC

The main road through Colton has always used as a bit of a 'rat run' with drivers avoiding the traffic at Sainsburys's roundabout, but is it getting worse or are people just avoiding the current roadworks?

• Once finished, will the improvements at the roundabout ease this problem?

• Will the opening of Junction 45 M1 reduce the amount of lorries running down Bullerthorpe Lane?

• Do you think we need traffic calming through Colton? i.e. sleeping policemen- the measure we have in place at the moment don't seem to slow traffic down.

A VERY SAD DAY FOR COLTON

2 Jan 05 - Old primary school demolished

colton primary school

A very sad site greeted Colton residents last week when work started on demolishing the old Colton primary school. It took less than 2 days to completely flatten the school which had stood on the site for over 128 years.

Attempts to stop planning permission from Colton residents had failed.

myColton.com received information from locals that had attempted to buy the site to convert the building. Plans such as changing the building to a pub, a restaurant, a community centre & a family home had all been refused.

The site was sold to make the maximum amount of money - to a development company for house building. Clearly money was a major issue here & there was no consideration for local heritage.

The school has been left to deteriorate since its closer in 1992.

There has been reports of asbestos in the building but local residents believe that this is just a story to fastrack plans to demolish the school.

• COLTON CRIMEWAVE?

9 October 04 - ColtonVillage.com has received reports of an increase of vandalism & theft in the area.

In July youths caused over £2000 of damage to Colton Institute which included mindlessly smashing all the windows. The Institute is a central part of the community & is home to lots of childrens clubs & parties, also wine tasting & yoga clubs.

Find below concerns from a local neighbourhood watch meeting regarding the issue of vandalism at the Institute & recommended action to be taken:

• Additional street lighting has been requested from Leeds City Council.

• Trimming and cutting of hedges and trees has been requested to Parks and Countryside to "expose" the parking bay, ensuring horses in neighbouring field still have full seclusion.

• Additional security to the Institute has been requested to the Police i.e; Security Cameras, lighting and extra Police patrols.

• Additional litter bins have been asked from MacDonald's. They did recently provide one but it has been removed.

Residents will receive a newsletter at the end of August telling them all what we have achieved and what still needs to be done.

Please do not hesitate to call the Police on 0845 6060606 if you see anything suspicious. We need to tell them everything in order to maintain a good Police presence. If they do not receive our calls they will monitor other areas.

Other occurrences of damage & theft.

• Frequent instances of bus shelters being smashed.

• Padlock & chain removed from gates & attempted theft of a motorcycle.

• A 3ft high garden windmill stolen from a front garden.

• Garden fences kicked & smashed.

From the e-mails ColtonVillage.com have received so far, the general consensus is that the fast food outlets on Bullerthorpe Lane are attracting more undesirable people into Colton, thus increasing crime in the area.

Making Colton residents more aware of the problems will hopefully increase peoples vigilance & make the area a crime free zone.

Have you had any instances of vandalism to your property? Anything stolen from your house or garden? Have you seen something or someone suspicious in the area?

Do you have any thoughts on what is causing the problem or any ideas on what to do to to stop it?

• Colton Primary School Development

21 JULY 04 - NEW APPLICATION FOR PLANNING PERMISSION.

colton primary school

After years of decline after it's closure in 1992, the owners of the site of Colton Primary school have applied for planning permission for a second time to build on the site.

The application is to build 3 five bedroom & 2 four bedroom detached houses.

Locals are very unhappy about the plans & believe that the school is a major landmark in the area & part of local heritage & should be preserved.

Residents nearby are also concerned about the increase in traffic & parking availability on School lane, especially during school drop-off & pick-up times.

There are also fears about the possible risk of asbestos in the building.

Plans for the development can be viewed at Halton Library.

What do you think?

Please go to: submit info, your thoughts & comments on what you think should happen to this building. Please indicate if you want your name & contact details publishing on the site.

Do you think it should be restored to it's original state or knocked down to make room for something else?

Comments will be published on the site. (see below)

If you would like to object to the planning application then please e-mail department.of.planning@leeds.gov.uk

or write to:

Colton Primary School - YOUR COMMENTS

"I believe that the Primary School should be restored to its former glory and put into use as a community/ information centre. This could incorporate facilities such as after school/holiday child care and youth groups. Also incorporated could be a community cafe and conference rooms to let, which would add an amount of sustainability. This, I believe, would help in fostering a community spirit and would give a much needed focal point within the area. I believe that the people of Colton probably pay more than their fair share of council tax, but are not afforded the same community provision as the less affluent areas of Leeds." (Colton Resident)

"The school is becoming an eyesore a dangerous site that children and animals could become injured.
Pull it down and redevelop the area." (Colton Resident)

"Colton desperately needs some central point where the community can meet. There is no "village centre" and the school would be the perfect place to redevelop for this purpose.
Young people living here have nowhere to go, yes, we pay our council taxes, but let's get real....this site will always be about who can make the most money out of it.
I suggest the parents of all young people living in Colton lobby the council about this.

By the way, I would love someone to organise a yoga class in Colton, but is there anywhere we can go?"
Caron Munro (Colton Resident)
